Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve has announced new “whale waters” areas in the lower West Arm and Whidbey Passage, effective from June 28, 2025. This move is in response to the presence of 25 or more humpback whales that have been spotted feeding in these areas. To ensure the safety of these marine creatures, a vessel speed limit of 13 knots has been set in these specific areas.
In addition to the lower West Arm and Whidbey Passage, the Lower Bay Whale Waters will also see the implementation of the 13-knot speed limit. This measure is being put in place due to the observed increase in humpback whale numbers in this area. The aim is to protect these magnificent creatures and maintain the delicate balance of the marine ecosystem in Glacier Bay.
The park encourages all visitors and vessel operators to respect these new regulations for the benefit of the humpback whales.
