Katmai National Park has announced a free traditional Sugpiaq qayak model building workshop for the communities of King Salmon and Naknek. The Sugpiaq, also known as the Alutiiq, are indigenous peoples of the Pacific Northwest Coast, known for their distinctive qayak designs. This workshop seeks to share and preserve this important cultural heritage.
The workshop is scheduled to run from February 23 to 27, 2026, between the hours of 5 and 8 pm, and from February 28 to March 1, 2026, from 1 to 4 pm. The event aims to provide a hands-on experience of traditional qayak model making, offering a unique opportunity for community members to learn about Sugpiaq history and culture.
This initiative by Katmai National Park aligns with its mission to preserve and share the rich cultural heritage of the region. The workshop is free and open to all members of the King Salmon and Naknek communities. For more details, visit the park’s official website.
