Whale Waters Update for Glacier Bay Effective August 21, 2025

August 21, 2025by Ranger Tom0
Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve has announced changes to its vessel speed limits, effective from 5 AM on Thursday, August 21, 2025. The current 13-knot speed limit around Gloomy Knob and Tidal Inlet is being lifted due to a decrease in the regular presence of humpback whales feeding in these areas.

In response to the shifting whale activity, new temporary 13-knot speed limits are being implemented in areas where whales have been more consistently seen. These areas include the waters in and around Blue Mouse Cove and Hugh Miller Rocks. The changes aim to protect five or more whales that have been observed feeding in these areas.

The updated operating requirements will remain in effect until further notice. The park encourages all vessel operators to stay informed about the current regulations and to respect the speed limits to ensure the safety of the marine life in the area.
