Restoring the Illinois Memorial

August 20, 2025by Ranger Tom0
The National Park Service (NPS) announced that comprehensive restoration work on the Illinois Memorial will commence on September 2, 2025. The memorial will be closed to the public during the restoration process. Despite the closure, visitors can still expect partial access to the memorial’s parking area to ensure continued access to the nearby Shirley House.

The project’s timeline gives contractors up to a year to complete the restoration work, indicating that the memorial might be inaccessible until September 2026. However, the Tour Road, an essential pathway for visitors, will remain open throughout the restoration period.

While the restoration is underway, the NPS encourages visitors to explore other attractions in the area, including the Shirley House. More details about the restoration project can be found on the NPS website.
