Water Advisory for Lake Powell

July 3, 2025by Ranger Tom0
The National Park Service (NPS) has issued a water advisory for Lake Powell, following the detection of cyanotoxins at potentially unsafe levels. The toxins were found at the mouth of Antelope Canyon, a popular spot within the lake. Cyanotoxins, which are harmful to both humans and animals, are produced by certain types of algae blooms.

The NPS has not provided specific details on the concentration levels of the cyanotoxins found, but they have indicated that the levels are at the “high end of safe exposure levels”. This suggests that while the water may not pose an immediate threat, it could become dangerous if the toxin levels increase. The NPS has not mentioned any specific health risks associated with the current toxin levels.

Visitors to Lake Powell, particularly those planning to visit Antelope Canyon, are advised to be cautious and avoid contact with the water until further notice. The NPS will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as necessary.
