January 23, 2026by Ranger Tom0
The Salinas Pueblo Missions National Monument is planning to carry out a prescribed burn at the Gran Quivira Unit. This operation is part of an effort to remove mechanical thinning piles, which are accumulations of vegetation that have been mechanically cut and gathered. The burn is intended to reduce the risk of a potentially uncontrolled wildfire in the future by eliminating these piles.

Prescribed burns are a common tool used by National Park Service to manage forest health and reduce the risk of wildfires. By carefully controlling the burn, the teams can safely remove excess vegetation that could fuel a wildfire, while also promoting the health of the forest ecosystem.

The date of the prescribed burn at Gran Quivira Unit has not been specified yet and will depend on weather conditions and other factors. The public will be notified in advance of the operation. The National Park Service is committed to ensuring the safety of park visitors, employees, and the surrounding communities during this operation.
