The National Park Service (NPS) and the Mountains Recreation and Conservation Authority (MRCA) have announced plans to repair the southern switchback section of the Hastain Trail in Franklin Canyon, part of the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area. The repairs, set to begin on Monday, September 29, 2025, are aimed at addressing damage caused by a storm in February 2024.
To facilitate the repair work, the NPS will close portions of the Hastain Trail on weekdays from Monday to Thursday while crews are on-site. However, weekend access to the trail will remain open for visitors. The repairs are expected to extend later to the Discovery Trail, another popular path in the recreation area.
The entire repair project is estimated to take approximately three months, depending on the weather conditions. The NPS has assured that it is committed to restoring the trails to their original condition and ensuring safe access for visitors. Further updates will be provided on the NPS website.
