The Booker T. Washington National Monument is set to commemorate the 130th anniversary of Washington’s pivotal speech that launched him into national prominence. This speech, known as the opening speech at the 1895 Cotton States and Industrial Exposition in Atlanta, Georgia, played a significant role in Washington’s life and career.

The National Park Service is inviting the public to join in the commemoration of this historic event. The speech, often referred to as the “Atlanta Compromise,” was pivotal in establishing Washington as a leading voice for African Americans during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
