Black Canyon and Curecanti move to Stage 1 Fire Restrictions

September 5, 2025by Ranger Tom0

Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park and Curecanti National Recreation Area are implementing Stage 1 Fire Restrictions as of September 5 at 12:01 am. The move to these restrictions is in response to the current wildfire risk, with the aim of ensuring visitor safety and protecting park resources. Stage 1 restrictions limit certain activities within the park that could potentially cause a fire.

Under the Stage 1 Fire Restrictions, park visitors are prohibited from igniting, building, maintaining, attending, or using a fire or campfire, except within established fire rings or grills at developed recreation sites. Smoking is also limited, only permitted within an enclosed vehicle, building, developed recreation site, or while stopped in an area at least three feet in diameter that is barren or cleared of all flammable material.

The park authorities urge all visitors to comply with these restrictions and remain vigilant about fire safety. They will continue to monitor the situation and update the restrictions as necessary. Visitors are encouraged to check the park’s website for the latest information on fire restrictions.
