National Park Service Issues Finding of No Significant Impact for Fire Island ORV Management Environmental Assessment

September 4, 2025by Ranger Tom0
The National Park Service (NPS) has issued a Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI) for the proposed Off-Road Vehicle (ORV) Management Environmental Assessment at Fire Island National Seashore. This decision comes after a comprehensive review of the proposed amendments to the seashore’s driving regulations. It’s important to note that this decision does not represent the Final Agency Action.

The evaluation process involved a thorough assessment of the potential environmental effects of ORV use on the park’s resources. This includes the impact on wildlife, vegetation, water quality, cultural resources, and visitor experience. The assessment aimed to ensure that the proposed changes would not have a significant negative impact on these areas.

While the FONSI marks a crucial step in the process, it does not represent the end of the decision-making process. The Final Agency Action, which will include a final decision on the proposed changes, is yet to be announced. This decision will be based on the findings of the environmental assessment and the feedback received from the public during the consultation period.
