Glacier Bay National Park officials have lifted the 13-knot speed limit for vessels in Lower Glacier Bay as of August 27, 2025. The change comes in response to a decrease in the population of humpback whales in the area. This allows vessels to return to the regular 20-knot speed limit, which is typically in place from May 15 to September 30 each year.
However, other speed restrictions in the park will remain in effect. The 13-knot limit in the vicinity of Blue Mouse Cove and Hugh Miller Rocks, implemented on August 21, will continue to apply. Similarly, the 10-knot speed limit around Jaw Point, which was set on August 9, will also stay in place.
These updated operating requirements came into effect from 5 AM on Wednesday, August 27, and will continue until further notice. The National Park Service continues to monitor and manage vessel speeds in the area to protect the local wildlife, particularly the humpback whales.
