Under the Stage 2 Fire Restrictions, certain activities are strictly prohibited within the park boundaries. These include building, maintaining, attending, or using a fire, campfire, charcoal, coal, or wood stove. Smoking is also prohibited, except within an enclosed vehicle or building, a developed recreation site, or while stopped in an area at least three feet in diameter that is barren or cleared of all flammable materials.
In addition, the restrictions include the prohibition of welding or operating acetylene or other torches with an open flame, and the use of explosives. Operating internal or external combustion engines without a spark arresting device properly installed, maintained, and in effective working order is also not allowed. These restrictions will remain in effect until further notice.
The National Park Service has urged visitors to follow these restrictions and help prevent wildfires. Violation of these prohibitions is punishable by a fine of not more than $5,000 for individuals or $10,000 for organizations, or imprisonment for not more than six months, or both.
The implementation of Stage 2 Fire Restrictions is a critical step in preserving the natural and cultural resources within Mesa Verde National Park and Yucca House National Monument. The National Park Service appreciates the public’s understanding and compliance with these necessary measures.
