The National Park Service (NPS) is set to commemorate the 161st birthday of Maggie Lena Walker, a pioneering Black banker and community leader from Richmond. The celebrations will take place from July 11th to 20th, 2025, and will include a range of community events, volunteer services, special tours, and exhibitions that honor Walker’s life and legacy.
The Maggie L. Walker National Historic Site will host the birthday celebration. Walker, renowned for her faith, hope, and courage, made significant contributions to her community in Richmond and beyond. The NPS aims to highlight her achievements and impact through the planned activities.
The event is a collaborative effort involving several community partners. These include the descendants of Maggie L. Walker, the St. Luke Legacy Center, the Library of Virginia, and the Richmond Department of Parks, Recreation & Community Facilities, among others. The public is invited to participate in the festivities and learn more about Walker’s remarkable life and work.
