The purpose of the prescribed burn was to increase the defensibility of these areas in the event of an unwanted wildfire. This strategy has proven effective in the past, as evidenced during the 2021 KNP Complex Fire in the same region.

The Ash Mountain Prescribed Burn is a crucial part of the park’s ongoing wildfire management strategy. By carefully controlling and managing these burns, the National Park Service aims to reduce the risk and potential damage of future uncontrolled wildfires.
