Food-Conditioned Grizzly Bear Trapped and Killed in Yellowstone National Park

May 17, 2025by Ranger Tom0
Yellowstone National Park officials have confirmed that an 11-year-old male grizzly bear was trapped and euthanized on May 14. The decision followed repeated instances of the bear seeking human food sources in developed areas of the park, a behavior that poses a significant risk to public safety.

The bear’s actions demonstrated a pattern of food-conditioned behavior, a situation where a bear associates humans with food and consequently loses its natural foraging habits. This behavior can lead to dangerous encounters between humans and bears, and is therefore considered a serious issue by park authorities.

The National Park Service maintains strict policies to manage such situations to ensure the safety of both park visitors and wildlife. Park visitors are reminded to store food and other attractants in bear-resistant containers and to maintain a safe distance from all wildlife. The park’s actions highlight the ongoing challenge of managing human-wildlife interactions in protected environments.
